Exercise video 5 - Calf and hip muscles

Question 5 of the Spasticity App Test

Here as a reminder: The fifth video of the Spasticity app, which you used to decide whether you answered the question with green, yellow or red.

Walking and foot position of the paralyzed leg: If possible, stand up and try to walk a few steps. Does the foot of the paralyzed leg turn inward so that you walk on the outside edge of the foot?

Perform the exercises in this order:

❶ Stretching exercise

❷ Activation exercise

❶ Stretching exercise for calf and hip muscles

The rotation muscles of the hip are important for keeping the leg axis straight when walking, thus enabling safe walking. This stretching exercise is performed in a sitting position. Place the foot of the paralyzed side on your other knee, then press the knee down firmly with your hands. You are performing the stretch correctly when you feel a slight pull but no pain in the upper outer area of the hip and buttocks.

Remain in this stretching position for at least 3 minutes before performing the activation exercise.

❷ Activation exercise for calf and hip muscles

Active flexion and external rotation of the hip with the knee bent occur when the first step is initiated, making it important for safe walking and climbing stairs. This exercise is performed in a safe standing position. Bring your paralyzed foot up to the side with the toe tensed and tap the sole of your foot on a small step or a box placed to the side of your paralyzed leg. Move the leg sideways upwards as quickly as possible, then return to the starting position as quickly as possible. Repeat this movement as often and as quickly as possible within 20 seconds.

To repeat the activation exercise, return to the stretching position and hold it again for at least 3 minutes. You can perform the entire stretch-activation exercise block several times a day.
