Exercise Video 9 - Shoulder (Rotation)

Question 9 of the Spasticity App Test

Here as a reminder: The ninth video of the Spasticity app, based on which you decided whether you answered the question with green, yellow or red.

Behavior of the paralyzed arm when walking: If possible, walk a few steps. How does your paralyzed arm behave? Is the elbow bent when walking?

Perform the exercises in this order:

❶ Stretching exercise

❷ Activation exercise

❶ Shoulder stretching exercise (rotation)

The external rotation of the shoulder is important for reaching objects in front of and next to the body. This stretching exercise is performed in a sitting position. Bend the elbow of the paralyzed side and keep it close to your body, while placing the hand away from the body on the edge of a table. The other hand can hold the elbow close to the body. To increase the stretch, turn your upper body away from the paralyzed side. You are performing the exercise correctly when you feel a slight pull but no pain in the back of the shoulder blade.

Remain in this stretching position for at least 3 minutes before performing the activation exercise.

❷ Activation exercise shoulder (rotation)

The shoulder's external rotation is used to reach objects right next to us. This exercise is best performed standing up, but it can also be done sitting next to a wall. Bend the elbow at a right angle. Mark a point on the wall and stand far enough away that you can touch the mark. Move your hand from your stomach outwards to the wall as quickly as possible while keeping your upper arm close to your body. Repeat the exercise within 20 seconds as often and as quickly as possible.

To repeat the activation exercise, return to the stretching position and hold it again for at least 3 minutes. You can perform the entire stretch-activation exercise block several times a day.
