Exercise video 3 - knee extensors, hip extensors

Question 3 of the Spasticity App Test

Here as a reminder: The third video of the Spasticity App, which you used to decide whether you answered the question with green, yellow or red.

Observing the paralyzed leg while standing: If possible, please stand up and observe your paralyzed leg. Is your knee fully extended while standing?

Perform the exercises in this order:

❶ Stretching exercise

❷ Activation exercise

❶ Stretching exercise knee extensor, hip extensor

This stretching exercise is performed in a lateral position. If possible, touch the paralyzed leg lying on top with the hand on the same side, or grasp a cloth around the ankle as shown in the video. Bend the knee and try to pull the heel as close as possible to the buttocks. The other leg remains relaxed. If you find this exercise too difficult, another person can help you with the stretch. You are performing the stretch correctly when you feel a slight pull but no pain in the front of your thigh.

Remain in this stretching position for at least 3 minutes before performing the activation exercise.

❷ Activation exercise knee extensor, hip extensor

Active flexion of the knee is important for safe walking and climbing stairs. This exercise is performed in a safe standing position. Shift your weight to the non-paralyzed side and pull your extended paralyzed leg up as quickly and as far back as possible so that your heel can touch a chair behind you, then return to the starting position as quickly as possible. Try to extend your hips as much as possible. Repeat this movement as often and as quickly as possible within 20 seconds.

To repeat the activation exercise, return to the stretching position and hold it again for at least 3 minutes. You can perform the entire stretch-activation exercise block several times a day.
