Question 8 of the Spasticity App Test

Here as a reminder: The eighth video of the Spasticity App, based on which you decided whether you answered the question with green, yellow or red.

Grip and wrist movement: If possible, please grasp a ball or a towel. Does your wrist bend too much and are you unable to let go of the object because you cannot straighten your fingers?

Perform the exercises in this order:

❶ Stretching exercise

❷ Activation exercise


❶ Stretching exercise for fingers/wrist extensors

This stretching exercise is performed in a sitting position with the elbow bent. Place the paralyzed elbow on a table or on your hip. Grasp the palm of the paralyzed hand with your other hand and press it backwards with your fingers pointing upwards to achieve a strong stretch in the paralyzed wrist. You are stretching the wrist flexor correctly when you feel a slight pull and no pain on the inside of the forearm.


Remain in this stretching position for at least 3 minutes before performing the activation exercise.

❷ Activation exercise finger/wrist extensor

Stretching the wrist is essential for all gripping movements. This exercise is performed in a sitting position. Place your paralyzed hand on the table with the palm facing down. Stretch your wrist upwards and mark the highest point. Now try to lift your hand as quickly as you can from the tabletop to the mark with your fingers extended. If this is too difficult, you can let your hand hang over the edge of the table at the start of the exercise and lift your wrist as far as possible from this position, then lower your hand again.

Repeat this sequence of movements within 20 seconds as quickly and as often as you can.

❷ Activation exercise finger/wrist plug

Alternatively, you can stretch and bend your wrist with your thumb pointing upwards if the movement against gravity is too difficult for you. You will see that this movement becomes easier to perform over time.

To repeat the activation exercise, return to the stretching position and hold it again for at least 3 minutes. You can perform the entire stretch-activation exercise block several times a day.
