Exercise Video 6 - Toe Claws
Question 6 of the Spasticity App Test
Here as a reminder: The sixth video of the Spasticity App, based on which you decided whether you answered the question with green, yellow or red.
Toe position when sitting and standing: Observe your toes when sitting. Are your toes relaxed and in a normal position? Do your toes curl together when you stand up?
Perform the exercises in this order:
❶ Stretching exercise
❷ Activation exercise
❶ Stretching exercise toe claws
This exercise is best performed in a safe standing or sitting position. Place the toes of the paralyzed foot on a towel roll or a small step and press the ball of your foot firmly downwards. To increase the stretch in the toes, lift your heel or lean forward with your upper body. You are performing the stretch correctly if you feel a slight pull but no pain in the stretched toes and the sole of your foot.
➤ Remain in this stretching position for at least 3 minutes before performing the activation exercise.
❷ Toe claw activation exercise
Curling toes can cause problems, especially when walking. This exercise is best performed while standing or sitting. Position the toes of the paralyzed leg flat on the floor, then lift your toes off the floor as often and quickly as you can within 20 seconds. When you put your toes down, make sure they are flat on the floor again. Remember, the slightest activation of the muscles is already a great success.
➤ To repeat the activation exercise, return to the stretching position and hold it again for at least 3 minutes. You can perform the entire stretch-activation exercise block several times a day.
