Exercise Video 10 - Chest Muscle
Question 10 of the Spasticity App Test
Here as a reminder: The tenth video of the Spasticity App, based on which you decided whether you answered the question with green, yellow or red.
Raising the elbow to the side: Sit in a relaxed position and try to raise your elbow to the side. Your assistant can help you with this. Is the muscle that forms the armpit very tense and prevents you from lifting your arm any further?
Perform the exercises in this order:
❶ Stretching exercise
❷ Activation exercise
❶ Chest muscle stretching exercise
This stretching exercise is performed in a sitting position. Place the paralyzed arm on the side of the backrest. The muscle is stretched optimally if you also turn your head and torso in the opposite direction. You are performing the stretch correctly if you feel a slight pull but no pain in the anterior axillary fold.
➤
Remain in this stretching position for at least 3 minutes before performing the activation exercise.
❷ Activation exercise chest muscle
You need to raise your shoulder to the side, for example to get a glass out of the cupboard. The exercise is best performed standing with the side of the body against a wall. If it is not possible to perform the exercise standing up, you can also do it sitting down. Raise your elbows as high as possible at your sides and mark a target point on the wall at the highest point. Now start the exercise with your elbows against your body. Extend your elbow sideways as quickly as possible up to the target mark and return to the starting position as quickly as possible. Repeat this movement as often and as quickly as possible within 20 seconds.
➤
To repeat the activation exercise, return to the stretching position and hold it again for at least 3 minutes. You can perform the entire stretch-activation exercise block several times a day.
